The LHIFA league began play on May 5th at a very wet Mine Falls Park. Despite the heavy rainfall from the night earlier, mother nature was on the players’ sides as all of the games avoided any rainfall. On the opening day of the season, there was 6 matches played by 12 teams who all have their sight on the first place trophy which was claimed by Nashua FC in the previous season, who held on to a 4-3 victory over Manzanillo in the league final.
The first two matches of the day were played at 9 am by Camotlan FC, La Selecta, Brasuca, and Pac Lowell. Camotlan FC and La Selecta were at a stalemate after 90 minutes of play, where both teams were able to net 2 goals each. Brasuca had a dream start to their LHIFA campaign, where they earned a 7-1 victory over Pac Lowell. The new boys on the block, Daniel Webster Wanderers took on a very talented Veladero side. The two teams played an entertaining match, with the Wanderers edging Veladero 2-1. Playing at the same time as the Wanderers and Veladero, Zacatecas defeated El Chalate on each of the teams’ season debut. The 11 am match up saw a 2-0 final score in favor of Zacatecas. Manzanillo who had finished the regular season of 2018 undefeated, took on Gallos at a 1 pm match up. Despite being considered the underdog by many, Gallos was able to stun Manzanillo 3-0. The last action of the day saw New England come back from a 2-0 deficit, where they beat defending champions, Nashua FC, 3-2.
